Types of Hauntings

If a person feels that their home is haunted, it can be beneficial to determine what type of haunting activity may be occurring. There are different types of hauntings that may involve intelligent ghostly energy or even demonic activity. The most common types of hauntings are intelligent or residual hauntings.

An intelligent haunting involves the presence of a spirit. The ghost is usually a person that has remained behind due to a connection with a person or place. The deceased personality may have stayed behind due to an emotional connection to family or because of unfinished business. This type of haunting is also referred to as an interactive haunting. It often takes place when a person dies suddenly or in a traumatic manner. An intelligent haunting may take place when the deceased person cannot rest or the living loved ones cannot let go. The spirit may remain connected to the loved ones and try to communicate or interact with them. A person experiencing an intelligent haunting may see apparitions and/or hear sounds such as a disembodied voice.
Residual hauntings typically stem from traumatic events and are not interactive. The events are imprinted on the environment and replayed like a recording. Any apparitions that may be seen are not able to interact with the living and are not even aware of their presence. An example of a residual haunting may be a battlefield where many soldiers died. A person may visit the site and hear marching and the sounds of battle. They may even see apparitions of soldiers. However, it is just like watching a television program. The characters are not aware of the person viewing the scene.

Poltergeist activity often involves a malevolent or mischievous spirit. Poltergeist activity usually starts abruptly and may include objects being thrown around, foul odors, loud noises and lights or appliances turning on and off. Poltergeists may assault people in the home or even pets. Poltergeists can cause physical harm such as hitting, scratching or even sexual assaults. Poltergeist activity usually focuses around one individual that seems to attract the manifested incidents. Some poltergeist activity is the result of a person’s psychokinetic ability. In cases such as these, the person is manifesting the activity unconsciously and isn’t even aware of the ability. Poltergeist activity usually stops as abruptly as it started.
Demonic hauntings are somewhat rare, but do occur. Demonic hauntings are caused by demons and can be dangerous. Signs of a demonic haunting may include growling, scratching, nightmares, unexplained temperature changes and foul odors such as the smell of sulfur or rotting flesh. Demons are strong and can inflict physical harm. They feed off of fear and anger. They can change form at will and may appear as masses of black fog. Demonic attacks can result in physical harm, sexual assault or even possession.

General hauntings may result from spirits that are trapped between realms, have unresolved issues or died in such an abrupt manner that they don’t realize they are dead. The spirit may be angry if his life was ended by murder or if he was wronged in some other way. A spirit may also remain earthbound if he is attached to a certain place such as the home where he lived when he was alive. The spirit may still view the property as belonging to him and tries to scare people away from the place. There are many reasons why hauntings may occur and why spirits may stay connected to the physical realm. In most cases, general hauntings do not cause harm to the living.
